Hello Everyone! For my first blog post, I would like to start with this one question:
Is the use of technology impairing the privacy of our patients?

Good question, my answer is, I don't think so. Though I believe that a way must be found to protect our health info because every week in the news we here how corporations have lost the financial information on millions of clients. Also identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America today. It is critical that patient health information is safeguarded.
We as professionals must learn to close our computer screens when we leave the terminal. Also,I can't tell you how many times i have heard interns and residents discussing patient info in public areas.

One thing that upsets me is when patient's families learn "lab values". I've had experiences when families/friends call in asking how the patient is doing, what's the current fio2 on the vent? How's today's BUN and creatinine! Sometimes, I feel as though I am obligated to give the answer, but by doing so is violating hipaa already.

We all have to make good effort to safeguard patient records.Technology makes us more vulnerable to identity theft. The Health Privacy Project at http://www.healthprivacy.org shares some common myths about HIPAA.
